Jedediah Ellis, son of Samuel Ellis, was born April 10, 1822 in Woodstock, Massachusetts (now Connecticut) to Samuel Ellis and Betsey Young. He died July 6, 1894, Syracuse, Onandaga, New York. He married April 3, 1845 in Oxford, Worcester, Massachusetts to Harriet Augusta Moffitt.
On James and Sophronia’s birth records it shows that Jedediah was a miller. Later in New York he became a shingle sawyer and a farmer.
Jedediah is buried in Richland, Oswego, New York where he had finally settled. He died in Syracuse, Onandaga, New York and had either moved in with his son Charles in Syracuse after his second wife’s death, or he was perhaps visiting. He was living in Richland as of the 1890 New York census.
Jedediah and Harriet Moffitt had seven children:
James Vernon Ellis
James Vernon Ellis was born July 15, 1848 in Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts and died April 17, 1926 in Daysville or Ogdensburg, Oswego. (Daysville was taken from obituary while Ogdensburg was taken from the New York Death Index) He married Martha R. Springer Phillips who was born in 1850 in Daysville and died in 1940 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York at the home of her granddaughter. Martha’s parents were John and Mary Bradner Springer.
James and Martha had one child, Ada May Ellis born March 26, 1878 in Daysville, Oswego County, New York. Ada married William Henry Gokey in 1903. He went by Henry. She contracted pneumonia and died February 16, 1925 in Pulaski, Oswego, New York. She is buried in the Willis Cemetery. Her death was particularly hard on her father who died a year later. Henry was born November 15, 1875 in Red Creek, Wayne, New York and died January 17, 1942 in Kissimmee, Osceola, Florida.
Ada and Henry Gokey had two children:
Charlotte Lucille (Ellis) Gokey born August 13, 1905 in Mexico, Oswego, New York, died February 20, 1964 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York and married July 14, 1930 in Buffalo, New York. Henry’s second wife was Hannah Delilah Gardner Cross.
James V. Ellis may be the gentleman featured in the book, The Politician. Here is an excerpt:
The part he [James V. Ellis] played in an incident in connection with the assassination of President McKinley at Buffalo had figured next in the papers. On the evening in question, when the martyred president was lying near to death, [13][14] a group of anxious citizens of Buffalo had gathered around a bulletin board where news of the sinking man’s condition was posted. When it was learned that McKinley had only a few hours to live, some one in the crowd, for the pleasure of hearing himself talk and the more doubtful one of shocking the others, voiced the sentiment that the country was “well rid of him.” The scoffer met swift punishment for his unfeeling and unpatriotic remark at the hands of Mr. Ellis, who happened to be among the bystanders, and who promptly knocked him down — a deed which won no little applause for Mr. Ellis and much exploitation by the press.

Sophronia Jennie Ellis
Sophronia Jennie Ellis was born December 7, 1850 in Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts to Jedediah Ellis and Harriet Moffitt. She married Isaac Henry Sickler in Pulaski, Oswego, New York about 1867. He was born September 22, 1837 in Pulaski. They had the following children:
- Luther Sickler

He married November 25, 1890 in Summit, Juneau, Wisconsin to Mary Matilda Baker. They were divorced. George married Myrtle Mercer on October 28, 1897 in Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin.
- Annie Lodima Sickler was born July 12, 1870 in Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin and died after 1942. She married in 1892 to Eugene Victor Fey Eugene Fey the son of John Fey and Lozina Violetta Rosannah Hornbeck. He was born September 6, 1868 in Prairie du Sac, Sauk, Wisconsin and died February 12, 1937 in Reedsburg, Sauk, Wisconsin. Their children:
- Eugene Fey born Mar 1895 Wisconsin
- Tress Fey

- Sydnia Wilkerson Sickler was born December 14, 1879 in La Valle, Sauk, Wisconsin (or Beloit?) and died after 1959. He married June 3, 1896 in Clinton, Wisconsin to Freda Olga Zwiehler.
Sophronia and Isaac divorced.
Sophronia married Thomas Sullivan, son of Timothy Sullivan and Catherine Finnegan, on September 3, 1891 in Wisconsin. Not sure how that marriage ended but she married again to Milo Leffingwell in 1893. In this record, her name is shown as Sophora.
Isaac remarried to Ella Miller Stafford in 1890 and they had a child Mima Sickler in 1894. Isaac died Oct. 4, 1912 in an old soldier’s home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Most of the above information was submitted by Scott Sickler.
Additional notes from Scott: From the 1850 census, Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., New York, household # 79:
Gradus Sickler 37 born in New York
Polly 31 born in New York
Margaret Ann 6 born in New York
George 57 born in New York
Isaac 14 born in New York
Isaac Henry is this Isaac I’m pretty sure and he is the son of George.
As you can see the names of Vernon, Henry and Harriet were passed down from Sophronia’s side. Also, Sophronia is sometimes shown as Sophia or Sophora.
While reviewing IGI files in the LDS web site I found another Isaac Sickler born 1838 in Halfmoon, Saratoga, New York to Abram S. and Catherine Fallow Sickler. Also found were William Henry Sickler b. 5 May 1832 in Halfmoon to Abram and Catherine. A marriage is record for William Henry Sickler on 3 Jun 1854 in Halfmoon to Alvira Smith, and another marriage in 1861 to Laverne Hungerford in Delaware, New York.
*IGI files show Sydnia as being born in Beloit.
Charles Ellis
Charles was born in 1853 in Richland, Oswego, New York and died December 1, 1907. Charles was married to Frances R. Trumbull born December 25, 1856 in New York (probably Richland) and died February 4, 1948 in Pulaski, Oswego, New York. She was the daughter of James W. Trumbull and Mary Jackson Trumbull. (See below)
Charles and Frances had one son:
- James Roy Ellis was born December 12, 1882 in Pulaski, Oswego, New York and died January 1, 1975 in Utica, Oneida, New York. He was married to Gerene Colon who died April 22, 1947. It doesn’t appear as if they had any children.
Interestingly, Charles also died from apoplexy as did his brother, John F. Ellis.
Looking at the 1880 U.S. Census, it looks like J.W. Trumbull (probably John) and his wife Mary were living in Richland, Oswego, NewYork with Frances B. Trumbull (dau) as well as James’ sister Ransom E. Trumbull, his father, James Trumbull and Charles Ellis (28).
In the 1930 and 1940 U.S. Census it shows Frances E. Ellis (83) living in Richland as a widowed sister with Ransom E. Trumball age 77. Her middle initial seems to show up as E and R. Her brother Ransom died in 1952. It says his only survivor was his nephew J. Roy Ellis of Pulaski.
Trumbull
From the family sketches chapter of the “Landmarks of Oswego County” (New York), page 273.
Trumbull, James W., of Scotch ancestry, was born in Richland February 15, 1834, son of James, who was born in Vermont and died in Oswego county aged eighty-eight. He married Malinda Covey, born in Oswego county, where she died aged forty-one. Their children were Elizabeth, Ann, Olive, Smith, Spencer, Luther, Maria, our subject, Selby D., and Elda; of whom Olive, Smith (killed in the battle of Petersburg), Spencer, Maria, Selby (who was wounded in Pittsburg Landing), and Elda are dead. The father was a soldier in the war of 1812. The grandfather, Simeon was born in New England and died in Vermont. Subject was educated at Richland, is a farmer and dairyman, and is a Mason. He married July 22, 1856, Mary Jackson of Oswego county, daughter of Hilance and Dolly (Fox) Jackson, by whom he had these children; Frances, born December 25, 1858 and Ransom, born January 29, 1863 died 1952. Frances married Charles Ellis of Richland and has one son; Ransom lives with his parents.
Other information that I have found on the LDS site (familysearch.org) is:
James Wallace Trumbull was born 15 Feburary 1834 in Richland, Oswego, NY and married Mary Jackson on 22 July 1855 in Alvion Township, Oswego, NY. Frances B. Trumbull was born 25 Dec 1858 in Richland, Oswego, NY.
Charles Ellis was the son of Jedediah Ellis and Harriet Moffitt.
Ames Cemetery in Pulaski, NY shows the following headstones for Trumbulls:
Trumbull, Ransom E. 1863-1952 [b: 29 Jan)
Trumbull, Roy 1882-1975
Trumbull, Serene 1883-1949
Trumbull, James W. 1834-1919
Trumbull, Mary Jackson 1833-1922
Horace M. Ellis
Horace was born February, 1855 in Richland, Oswego County, New York and died June 19, 1938 in Marcy, Oneida, New York. He married in 1881 to Sarah M. Hall. He was living in Syracuse when he attended his brother John’s funeral in 1909 in Illinois.
It doesn’t look like Horace and Sarah had any children. I can’t find any information on Sarah except that she was born in New York in 1854. However, there is a Sarah Hall age 26 in the 1880 US Federal Census living in Richland, Oswego, New York with her brother John Hall age 27 and mother Mary Hall age 63.
Using the U.S. and state censuses, I was able to piece together his whereabouts.
- 1860 listed as child of Jedediah Ellis in New York
- 1870 living in Richland, New York
- 1875 living in Richland, New York, farm hand
- 1880 in Richland, New York, farm laborer
- 1900 born February 1854 New York
- 1905 living in Syracuse, New York
- 1910 Lodger in Onondaga, New York
- 1930 living in Syracuse, New York as a lodger and listed as widowed
I found a newspaper article from the Star-Gazette in Elmira, New York on August 4, 1926, page 20 about Horace doing some public speaking about a new way to do higher math. Check it out.

Hall Family
John Hall was born February 22, 1812 in England and died January 23, 1874 in New York. He married Mary Nicholson who was born August 1, 1814 in England and died April 16, 1891 in New York. John was a farmer. Their children:
- Richard Hall born about 1841 in Cortland, New York
- Thomas N. Hall born about 1847 in Oswego, New York
- Mary Hall born about 1849 in Oswego, New York
- John A. Hall born about 1852 in Oswego, New York
- Sarah Hall born July 1854 in Oswego, New York and died in 1913 in Syracuse, Onandaga, New York.
By the 1880 Census Sarah is living with her mother Mary at her brother John’s home. So, John Hall died between 1870 and 1880. Sarah married Horace in 1881.

John Fremont Ellis
A birth record has not been found for John Fremont Ellis. There is no mention of his birth date on his death certificate. The death certificate says that he was 52 years of age when he died in 1909. My grandfather (John’s grandson) kept a date book with birth, death, and marriage dates. I found an entry for John Fremont Ellis on June 9, 1858 and it gave his birthplace as Syracuse, Oswego, New York. According to the 1850 census, his family was living in Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts and by 1860 the New York State Census of 1860, shows his family living in Richland, Oswego, New York. It is possible that the family was in Oswego, New York in 1858. On his son Franklin M. Ellis’s birth certificate it shows Oswego, New York, as the birth place of John F. Ellis. John lived in Richland until 1880 we find him as a boarder in Canandaigua, Ontario, New York where he worked as a carpenter. He removed to Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin sometime before his marriage in 1883.
On May 1, 1883 John married Esther Jennet White in Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin. “Jennie” was the daughter of Alfred J. White and Jennet Blodgett. She was born in 1864 at either Brasher Falls, New York, or Evanston, Cook, Illinois. Her marriage certificate shows the former and her death certificate shows the latter.
John once performed with the Buffalo Bill Cody Wild West Show as a sharpshooter. It is difficult to pinpoint the time exactly except that the picture on the left suggests he was a little older so perhaps he did so after his wife’s death and before his second marriage. Family lore said that he could shoot marbles rolling on the ground and pennies thrown in the air. The picture on the left was taken from a printer’s block in the possession of a family member. I visited the Buffalo Bill Cody museum in Wyoming and asked if they had any records about John’s participation. They said that they had several shows running in different parts of the country with actors moving in and out of the troupe with some frequency, so unfortunately the records are incomplete.
In Beloit he worked as a painter and then as a hired hand on the McMasters farm in Roscoe Township, Winnebago, Illinois. After he was widowed, Vernon and Frank were raised by their grandmother, Jennet White who was also widowed at the time. After his wife’s death, John lived as a boarder at the home of his sister Sophronia and brother-in-law, Miles Leffingwell in Beloit.
John and Jennet had two sons:
Vernon Chauncey Ellis
Vernon was born February 12, 1884 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois and died in July 14, 1971 in Rock Falls, Whiteside, Illinois. He married November 12, 1902 in Rockford to Minnie May Faulkner. She was born in 1881 in Rockford and died young on September 27, 1909 in Rockford.
Interestingly, a pattern of early maternal deaths emerges. John Fremont’s mother, Harriet Moffitt, passed away when he was just 14 years old. His wife, Jennet White, passed away and left their young sons to be raised mostly by their grandmother. Vern’s wife, Minnie Faulkner, passed away quite young also and left her young children to be raised by her Faulkner relatives. And the pattern continued when Vernon’s daughter Janett died when her youngest was just 8 years old.
Vernon is shown in the 1910 US Census as a lodger in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois. Vernon was an interior and exterior decorator and painter for many years. In earlier years he painted buggies in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois. He was a gentle man who loved children. His hobbies included making children’s furniture and painting pictures.
Vernon married his second wife, Mary E. McFalls August 20, 1910 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois. She was born April 12, 1891 in Lyndon, Whiteside, Illinois and died June 13, 1964 in Rock Falls, Whiteside, Illinois. They had one daughter.
Photograph of Vernon and Minnie’s children taken when she died. Sadly the little guy died shortly afterwards.

(or Sophia Helen Nori) Helen as we knew her was born February 2, 1907 in Teuva, Lansi-Suomen Laani, Finland and died September 6, 1966 in Nipigon, Thunder Bay Ontario, Canada. Howland and Helen on their wedding day. Howland is on the left.
William John Ellis
William was born March 31, 1908 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois and died July 21, 1911 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois.
Juanita Mae Ellis
Juanita was born in 1928 in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois and died April 8, 1990 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois. She married Donald Ralph Welker, Jr. (1924-1998) and had three children:
Donald Ralph Welker, Jr. was born February 18, 1953 in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois and died December 14, 2020 in Bradenton, Manatee, Florida.
Juanita’s second marriage was on September 10, 1955 in Rock Island, Illinois to James Eward Blair. He was born March 25, 1915 in Thomson, Carroll, Illinois and died February 11, 1991 in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois. They had one daughter, living.
Franklin Merrill Ellis
Frank born February 12, 1886 in Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin and died September 13, 1960 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois.
Frank married Hazel Lillian Willsey in 1923 in Boone, Illinois. Hazel was born in February of 1894 in Illinois and died February 7, 1961 in Winnebago, Illinois. She and Frank had only one daughter:
“Maxine” and Nels had two sons:
Phyllis Maxine Ellis was born February 7, 1924 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois and died February 7, 1987 in Sharpsburg, Coweta, Georgia. She married Nels Theodore Nelson who was born September 14, 1920 in Persnas, Borgholm kommun, Kalmar län, Sweden and died December 24, 1946 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois. Four generation photo is of Margaret James, Hazel Lillian Willsey, Phyllis Ellis, and Theodore Nelson.
- Theodore Franklin Nelson Theodore died in an auto accident. Bradley was featured in a Life Magazine story on promising High School football players.
- Living
After Nels’ death, Maxine married on September 27, 1952 in Winnebago County to Willard C. Anderson. No children from that union.
Frank was a really decent fellow who was involved in his community. He ran a funeral home in Rockford, Illinois and was a World War I veteran. I was always puzzled about where the name Franklin Merrill came from. After a trip to the northern tip of New York I discovered that Frank’s grandfather, was name Merrill and he lived in Franklin county. Coincidence?
I had the pleasure of meeting Phyllis “Maxine” Anderson many years ago at her home in Rockford. She was delightful and had only kind things to say about her father.
James H. McMasters died in 1893 and John F. Ellis married his widow, Emma J. McMasters on June 19, 1905 in Winnebago County. Illinois. He also took over management of her very profitable farm. After 4 years of marriage John had mentioned to some relatives that he thought his family was trying to poison him. He could not have meant his sons who were living in Rockford at the time. So, when he suddenly dropped dead in a ditch near his home of what appeared to be mysterious causes, a lot of suspicion was cast in the direction of his wife. Hence, many sensational articles began to appear in the paper and an autopsy was demanded in order to clear her good name. The coroner determined that the true nature of his death was apoplexy. John was buried in an unmarked grave at the Beloit cemetery in the same lot as his first wife, Jennie.
John died August 23, 1909 in Roscoe, Winnebago, Illinois. He is buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin in the White family lot. There is no headstone. Interestingly, both John F. Ellis and his brother Charles Ellis both died from apoplexy. Apoplexy symptoms are similar to poisoning symptoms and it does change the mental status. So, it makes perfect that John may have thought he was being poisoned.

Alma J. Steckel born February 23, 1912 in Syracuse, New York and died July 31, 1996. She married a Hume.
Charles G. Havens was born July 14, 1858 in Ithaca, Tompkins, New York, and died May 12, 1895 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York. He was the son of Zalmon Davis Havens (1882-1833) and Mary A. Taylor (1837-1917).
The last six children were all born in Oswego County, New York though birth records could not be found at the Pulaski courthouse. The 1860 U.S. Census for Oswego County, New York, shows Jedediah at 39 years of age and living in the Town of Richland, Oswego, New York as a farmer with his family, Harriet A., James V., Sophronia, Carles, Horace and John F.
Harriet died in 1864 in Richland, Oswego, New York. Jedediah married a woman named Susan about 1869. She was born June 15, 1835. Susan died October 14, 1872 at age 32. Jedediah and Susan had one son:
- Frederick A. Ellis born July 3, 1869, died June 29, 1884 at age 15 in Richland, Oswego, New York.
By the 1875 New York state census, Jedediah had a domestic named Betty Dixon age 44 working in their home. In the 1880 U.S. State Census it shows M(?) Dixson, age 50, housekeeper. They are not listed as husband and wife.
I’m sure after Frederick died in 1884, she was no longer needed and Jedidiah is shown living alone in the 1892 New York State Census in Oswego County.
There is a Betsey P. Dixson keeping house for the Brace family in Sandy Creek Township which is close to Richland.

He married JOSIE FLORENCE LITTLE January 09, 1916 in Des Moines, Iowa., daughter of JOESPH LITTLE and MARGARET STOKESBERRY. She was born May 30, 1897 in Queen City, Mo, and died January 1979 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Notes for EDWARD EARL CARTER, SR:
Had changed his name to Harvey Robert Hein and moved to Oregon. He married a Grace Cosner, and they had children named Mary(who died as a teen ager in a car wreck), and a girl by the name of Betty and one son by the name of Robert whom they called Bobby. And a small child by the name of Gracie. Name of the town in Oregon is Milton.
MAN OF MANY NAMES. Information provided by Cheryl Carter and researched by my wife Jeanie.
Edward was born 26 September 1893 in Baraboo, Sauk, Wisconsin. He married Josephine on 29 January 1916. We have never been able to find a marriage license to prove this. This is what Sara Little and Olah Little (Josie’s sisters told us years later). They were supposed to have been married in Des Moines, Iowa. I still haven’t proven this – He died 28 May 1943 in Walla Walla, Washington. Buried 30 May 1943 in Milton, Oregon. He was known as several names. He was born Luther Merrit Sickler. His parents were George Sickler and Mary Baker. The had only one son together, which they named Luther. He somewhere changed his name to Edward Earl Carter. He was married twice. His second wife was Grace Cosner.
From a relative’s letter — Harlan Ramsey;
Luther and wife I believe Grace and 5 kids arrived at our old farm and lived there several months until they got on their feet, somewhat, was about 2 years before Mary (his mother) died. When Luther arrived at our place he was very down and out — he and family had not eaten for some time. Grace was younger then he.
From another relative’s letter — Lue Jackson;
When Luther’s mother, Mary divorced George Vernon Sickler (Luther’s father) she got custody of Luther, but a few years later he was kidnapped by his father and she couldn’t find them. Even had the Red Cross and Salvation Army helping her. But when he was a young man he found her living in LaCrosse-Wisconsin. But one day he took off again and she didn’t hear from him for sometime. She could never write to him or keep in contact with him as he was always going by a different name and never gave her any addresses. In the 1930’s he came to Wisconsin with a wife by the name of Grace and they had 4 or 5 children. Being in the time of the Big Depression, he couldn’t find work, so one day said he was leaving for California. We never saw him again, couldn’t even contact him when his mother died in 1939.
From a letter from Betty Staggs (daughter from his marriage with Grace);
I will try to tell you something about our beloved father. He was not known to us as Edward Earl Carter. His given name was Luther Merrit Sickler, was adopted by German people, and given the name of Harvey Robert Hein. (This I don’t believe was true &mdash’ I think he just made this up). He was born September 26, 1893 at Baraboo, Wisconsin. His mother’s name was Mary Jackson (she was married to at least 5 husbands). Daddy had a half-brother Claude Henderson. Died at age 83 close to where we lived at Lebanon Oregon. Another half-brother Hollis Jackson resides in Madison, Wisconsin. Two half-sisters — Mrs. Lois Bemis of Casper, Wyoming and Aunt Meryle. She died a few years ago. Our daddy died of heart trouble at the age of 49 years 8 months and 2 days old. I was close to 13 years old. He passed away May 28, 1943 at Walla Walla, Washington. Our home town was Milton, Oregon — 9 miles away. Of course he is laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Milton. He told Betty and family that he served in Germany in World War I. He had a Smokey the Bear hat for many years, so I believed him, but why we can’t find records is beyond me.
When he left Josie he took on the name of Harvey Robert Hein. I believe he just picked this name and started a new life. From the application on his Social Security Number — Harvey Robert Hein (name changed through adoption), he was from Milton, Oregon (1936) and employed with J.P. Burk Canning Co. in Milton, Oregon. He was 43 years old and born Sept 26 1893 in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Father’s name was George Sickler and Mother Mary Jackson.
The divorce date given by Aunts Olah and Sara Little — Oct 8, 1927. No divorce records were filed in Schuyler Co. or any of the counties in Missouri for Edward Earl Carter and Josephine Little. However, files are incomplete.
From the marriage return of H.R. Hine and Grace Cosner it shows he lied about his name, age, and father’s name. He lists his residence as Spokane, Washington.
From a letter from Josephine Carter Henke;
I never knew Ed, Sr’s family. We did hunt them up, but didn’t keep in touch with them. He could not stay anywhere. He couldn’t stay. I couldn’t go. Not a happy life for us.
From the State of Wisconsin/Department of Military Affairs — He enlisted in Co. “D” 2nd Inf. He was 18 years old. Occupation — laborer, eyes-blue, hair light, complex-dark, height 5 feet 7 inches tall. He enlisted 9/10/1908. He was discharged 10/3/1909. His term was for 3 years but he was discharged early because he was guilty of stealing. National Guard of Wisconsin, not sure he was, however, the envelope was from the National Guard of Wisconsin — Department of the Army and Air Force.

White Family
Thanks to ancestry.com and DNA tests, I have finally been able to document this family back a little further. The first known ancestors were William White and Sarah Moreton. They had at least one son, Merrill White who was born September 17, 1796 in Brookfield, Vermont and died in 1881. He was married to Ammarillia Wakefield who was born in 1801 in Vermont and died July 4, 1876 in Bombay, Franklin, New York. Merrill was in the War of 1812.
Merrill and Ammarillia had the following children:
Altha L. White born about 1831 in New York, died September 26, 1881. She married Moore and had at least one child—Alsi M. Moore (1857-1930). Altha married second to Joseph Beeman.
Alfred J. White (see below)
Albert White born about 1834 in New York.
Albion White born 1838 in New York married Matilda who was born in 1854. They had two daughters: Florence E. White born 1870, and Maud M. White born 1878.
Chancey W. White born June 1841 in Bombay, Franklin, New York, died October 11, 1900 in Bombay. He married in 1863 to Paulina Julama Farmer born 1840. They had seven children:
- Jennie F. White born 1866
- Lessie White born 1867

- Cora White born 1880
Alfred J. White was born September 17, 1831 in New York and died February 4, 1900 in Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin. He was married to Jennet L. Blodgett who was born February 4, 1822 in New Hampshire, and died April 1, 1907 in Beloit. Jennet (Jeanette) was previously married to Daniel Crocker. She and Daniel had at least 6 children prior to his death. Jennet married second to Alfred and emigrated to Canada for awhile and then to Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin. Some of the Crocker girls took the name of White which makes for some very confusing records! See more on Crockers below.
Alfred White and Jennet Blodgett had the following children:
Chauncy White
Chauncy was born August 18, 1862 in North Augusta, Canada and died September 27, 1947 in Beloit, Rock, Illinois. He married September 18, 1880 to Olive Clark (1865-1939) in Evanston, Cook, Illinois.

- Alfred Issic Mickey born July 12, 1899 in Chana, Ogle, Illinois, died March 21, 1978 in Janesville, Rock, Wisconsin. His marriage records are confusing. Her name was Siota Belle or Sylvia Anderson (1897-1963) married February 19, 1921 in Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa she was the daughter of Grant and Ida E. Anderson. She was married first to Jay William Lydick and they had one son, Jay William Lydick. Alfred and Siota’s children were:

Esther (Jennie) Jennet White
Jennie was born October 10, 1867 Brasher Falls, St. Lawrence, New York married to John Fremont Ellis on May 1, 1883 in Beloit, Rock, Wisconsin and died January 21, 1900 in Beloit.
One of these women is Jennie White. I thought it might be the one sitting in the front on the left because of a family resemblance. However the girls with the heavier brows on the right might also be her. Chauncey White had very distinctive eyebrows.
Poor Alfred died within weeks of his daughter, Jennet. What a terrible burden for Jennet White who lost both her daughter and her husband. She then took in her grandsons to raise until her death in 1907. Also in Jennet’s household in 1900 was her daughter Frankie and husband Leonard, as well as their three sons.
Notes: Alfred White and William Blodgett are both listed as pastors of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Mexico Village in Oswego County, New York. The church was organized in 1829. Jedediah Ellis settled in Richland, Oswego County, New York which is just down the road from Mexico. His son, John married Esther Jennet White, daughter of Alfred White and Jennet Blodgett.

Young Family
I am not certain who Betsey Young’s parents were at this point.
- Elizabeth “Betsey” Young of Woodstock married Sturbridge, Massachusetts, February 11, 1808 to Samuel Ellis, perhaps born Charlton, Massachusetts June 2, 1776, son of Jedediah Ellis and Martha Freeman (see above).
- Sarah Young (proposed sister) married Benjamin Whitcomb and they had at least one daughter, Sarah “Sallie” Whitcomb born January 15, 1807 in New Hampshire and died August 7, 1861 in Sciota County, Ohio. Sallie married Edward Cranston. Edward was born about 1792-94 in Rhode Island and died October 26, 1864. Edward’s first marriage was to Nabby Cole on February 18, 1821 in Scioto County, Ohio. Sallie and Edward had three children (probably all were born in Sciota County, Ohio):
- Benjamin E. Cranston born January 17, 1833 in Ohio and died June 29, 1894.
- Jeremiah Cranston born August 5, 1827 in Wheelersburg, Scioto, Ohio and died June 7, 1897, same place.
- Narcissa K. Cranston born 1826 in Ohio and died January 5, 1852.
I’ve collected this information below from “Genealogies of Woodstock Families” (formerly Massachusetts and now Connecticut). It is obvious how difficult it is to connect these individuals with the information given below. However, there is probably no doubt that all or most are related.
James Young of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, married in Woodstock August 18, 1814 to Esther Ledoit of Woodstock, born about 1794, died Sturbridge March 30, 1817 at age 23, daughter of Elder Biel Ledoit and Joanna Ainsworth.
Zelotes Young married Woodstock December 19, 1830 Mary Bowers. Perhaps he was identical with Zelotes Young of Killingly who married East Haddam, Connecticut, November 30, 1837 Mary E. Doane of Essex, Connecticut.
Daniel Young of Smithfield, Rhode Island, born April 6, 1808, died Woodstock November 8, 1895, age 88, married in Woodstock September 2, 1834 to Lois W. Pearce of Woodstock, born Massachusetts October 14, 1810, died May 24, 1879, age 69. His only heir-in-law was a son, Frank Young, of Leicester, Massachusetts.
Freelove Young of Woodstock, born Ashford, Connecticut, August 27, 1821, daughter of Thomas Young, Jr., and Polly Phillips, married Woodstock October 21, 1843 Salem Lynde Ballard of Woodstock, born Thompson, Connecticut, May 8, 1820. He married secondly to Harriet Scranton Warner.
Mary Ann Young born Foster, Rhode Island, September 22, 1797, died June 26, 1862, married Woodstock August 13, 1815 Erastus Chandler, born Abington, Connecticut, May 8, 1788, died January 4, 1873, son of Deacon Philemon Chandler and Molly Sabin.
William Young of Woodstock married Wales, Massachusetts, December 16, 1804 Hannah Walker of Wales.
Nelson Young died Woodstock 1869, married Patience___, born Rhode Island about 1810.
