Fourth Generation

Richard John Hall (Farnham, Benjamin, Joseph, Richard)
RJ Hall and Mary Caroline

Richard John Hall (Farnham, Benjamin, Joseph, Richard) born September 14, 1800 in Metheun, Essex, Massachusetts and died March 18, 1891 in Eau Claire, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Picture is of his second wife Mary “Caroline” Fisher Holbrook.

John was married September 3, 1822 probably in New York to Abigail Bentley. Abigail was born July 21, 1801 in Somerset, Somerset, Pennsylvania and died September 3, 1838 in Ellington, Chautaqua, New York. John and Abigail had the following children:

John D Hall (Richard, Benjamin, Joseph, Richard)

John was born July 12, 1822 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York, died December 2, 1896 in Chippewa County, Wisconsin. He married Melissa Arnold (probably New York) who was born June 21, 1828 in Maine and died January 24, 1884.

Their children:

  • Eliphlat Ingolls Hall born July 13, 1848 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York, died June 9, 1927 Lewis County, Washington. Married first in 1874 to Alice May Page (1854-?) and had one daughter: Florence Bell Hall (1893-1972). Married second in 1872 in New Jersey to Clara Belle Geer (1868-1922) and had two children: Edgar and Norman Cecil.
  • Josephine Rebecca Hall (aka Rebecca Josephine) (John, Richard, Benjamin, Joseph, Richard) married Charles E. Bailey.
  • Mary Hall born May 27, 1853 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York and died about 1946 in Duluth, St. Louis, Minnesota. She married January 4, 1875 in Sparta, Monroe, Wisconsin to James Roderick Perkins and had seven children: John, Roderick, Maude, Willard, Norman, Abbie, and Harry.
  • Lennie Maria Hall born about 1864 in Wisconsin, died February 26, 1955 in Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington, married 1893 Burt Clarence Smith (1865-1935) and had three children: Asa, Lottie, and Florence.
Melissa Arnold Information

Melissa Arnold Hall is shown in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census as 60 years old and living with Charles E. and Rebecca Bailey. She shows herself and her parents as all being born in Maine.

It is odd that there was no death certificate for Melissa Arnold in Eau Claire County, although they may have lived across the river in Chippewa county. Since they were living in Wells, Monroe, Wisconsin in 1880, it’s possible she died there. However, she is buried in Augusta, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin. There is a probate record for a Melissa Hall who died May 29, 1882. The probate records are from 1883-1889 in Koshkonong, Jefferson, Wisconsin. It states that she lived in Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, Wisconsin. Chauncey Converse was the executor and he was also an inheritor as well as her sister, Mrs. Jane Peirce and a Charles D. Handy. This makes no sense to me as you would think that she would leave money to her immediate family.

Rebecca Ann Hall

Rebecca born November 28, 1825 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York, died April 28, 1885 in Sparta, Monroe, Wisconsin. She married about 1844 to Amos Jacob Hollenbeck (1824-1864). Their children:

  • Frances R. Hollenbeck 1844-1921
  • Henry Dewitt Hollenbeck born 1847 in New York, died October 14, 1923
  • Fidella Hollenbeck May 20, 1850 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York, died after 1930 in Viroqua, Vernon, Wisconsin.
  • Marinda Hollenbeck 1853 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York, died January 2, 1922 in Hennepin County, Minnesota.
  • Jeffrey F. Hollenbeck born March 31, 1857 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York, died December 7, 1933 in Sparta, Monroe, Wisconsin.
  • Lilly J. Hollenbeck 1859-?
Eliphalet E. Hall

Eliphalet was born February 24, 1828 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York. He married Electa A. (c. 1830-1914) and had one daughter, Ella A. Hall (1853-1935) who married Hiram Gardiner Moe (1850-1930).

Benjamin Franklin Hall

Benjamin was born November 14, 1830 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York and died September 1862 in Carrollton, Orleans Parish, Lousiana.

Charles D Hall

Charles was born July 23, 1833 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York and died December 1859 in Sparta, Monroe, Wisconsin. He married Maria Betsey Hitchcock and they had two children: Darlin Orlando and Clara Alta.

Joseph Farnham Hall

Joseph was born April 18, 1836 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York, died January 2, 1910 in Augusta, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He was married to Amelia Ann Burlingame (1841-1926). They had nine children: Henry Johnathan, Etta Jane, Abbie M., Eda May, Lutheria Ann, Richard Farnham, Alpha William, and Mable Clare.

Richard married second to Mary “Caroline” Fisher (previously married to a Holbrook) on November 20, 1838 in Augusta, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Caroline was born May 8, 1815 in New York or Massachusetts and died June 20, 1880 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Richard and Caroline had the following children:

Eliza Jane Hall

Eliza was born July 14, 1841 in Chili(?), New York (probably Ellington, Chautauqua, New York) and died January 4, 1923 in Iowa. She married George Washington Daniels and had ten children: Harriet Ann, Frank, Phronetta, Phonina, Ida M., John M., Minnie, James Harvey, George, and Orpha.

Sarah A. Hall

Sarah was born January 20, 1846 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York. She may have married James K. Lynn in 1864.

James A. Hall

James was born June 1852 probably in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York and died September 17, 1917 in Pueblo, Pueblo, Colorado. He married Mary F. Gregg on August 2, 1899 in Pueblo, Pueblo, Colorado. They had three children: Lorenzo A. and Lee T.

The Indian War that Wasn’t

A distant cousin shared this funny story with me recently. He also shared the picture of Richard “John” Hall. On Saturday the 6th day of January, 1838, near the same spot where a quarter of a century before the first settler in the Town of Ellington felled the trees and erected his rude log cabin …
