Edward was born March 11, 1809 in Western, Oneida County, New York to Captain James Martin and Caroline Pike. Edward died August 18, 1876 in Erie, Whiteside, Illinois.
He married Chloe Hopkins in Erie, Whiteside, Illinois. Chloe was born September 22, 1813 in Lebanon, Madison County, New York and died August 10, 1884 in Wadena County, Illinois.
After Edward died, Chloe lived with her daughter, Lettie in Minnesota. In the 1880 census she can be found living in Compton, Otter Tail, Minnesota. Her father’s birthplace is shown as Connecticut and her mother’s birthplace is shown as Massachusetts. They had the following children:
Helen Martin
Helen was born November 19, 1831 in Mexico, Oswego County, New York, married July 10, 1856 and died July 30, 1888.
Henry Martin
Henry was born June 7, 1833 in Parish, Oswego, New York and died April 13, 1903 in Scribe, Oswego, New York. He married September 22, 1853 to Mary J. Prosser (1836-1912). They had 5 children.
George Martin
George Martin was born July 20, 1835 in Scriba, Oswego County, New York, and died August 7, 1856 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.
George was married to Martha Eliza Meeker born January 17, 1842 in Huron, Wayne County, New York, died October 11, 1912 in Watervliet, Berrien County, New York. She was the daughter of Benjamin Shear Meeker and Betsy Gould Jones. Their children:
- Willie Adelbert Martin born July 13, 1862 and died May 18, 1868
- Lora Almina Martin December 24, 1864 and died May 6, 1868
- Chester Henry Martin February 18, 1872 in Huron, Wayne County, New York, died May 10, 1926 in Watervliet, Berrien County, Michigan. He was married to Ida Sophia Seron (1872-1944).
Platt Martin
Platt Martin was born May 1, 1837 in Marion, Wayne County, New York. Family oral history claims that Platt died in the Civil War when he was torn to pieces by a cannon ball in the battle of Chincoteague, Virginia. Fred Hillie, Mrs. Wyatt Lanphere’s father who claimed he was near him at the time and witnessed this. This story was made up I suppose to save his family the dishonor of his desertion. I found his military record from the Illinois State Archives and it shows Martin, Platt, PVT, Company B 140 Illinois US INF of Morrison, Whiteside, Illinois. He was age 27, 5’6″, Dark hair, gray eyes, dark complexion, single, farmer and originally from Oswego County, New York. He joined in Morrison, Whiteside, Illinois on May 15, 1864 and was mustered in June 18th of that year at Camp Butler, Illinois. He was mustered out on October 29, 1864 at Chicago, Illinois. Then he was mustered back in on February 8, 1865 at Dixon, Illinois as a PVT in Company G, 147 IL US INF under Captain Eustace. He is shown as a sailor. His residence was Erie, Whiteside, Illinois, age 26, 5’6″, brown hair, blue eyes and his complexion was dark. It showed Oswego, New York as his birthplace. He deserted October 26, 1865 at Americus, Georgia. He was married but no spouse has been identified through records. My source is the Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls.
Carlos W. Martin
Carlos was born February 14, 1839 in Walworth, Wayne County, New York and was said to have married September 18, 1861. However, he died April 11, 1858 of battle wounds received in the civil war. He died in the hospital at Lexington, Missouri. His name is on a commemorative monument for 12 young men in their early 20’s killed in the civil war. The monument was put up by the Ladies Aid in Portland, Henry, Illinois, Sandytown town cemetery about 3 miles south of Prophetstown, Whiteside, Illinois.
Emerett Martin
Emerett was born September 29, 1841 in Parish, Oswego, New York and died April 10, 1904 in Oak Valley, Otter Tail, Minnesota. She married April 11, 1858 in Whiteside County, Illinois to Benjamin Burton. Benjamin was born October 12, 1835 in Chautauqua County, New York to William Burton and Mary Pierson. He died September 5, 1921 in Todd County, Minnesota.
Their children:
- William C. Burton was born April 25, 1860 in Illinois and died February 4, 1927 in Douglas County, Minnesota.
- Helen Mary Burton was born November 1861 in Illinois and died December 26, 1925 in Yakima, Yakima, Washington. She married Sidney M. Packard (1854-1932) and 8 children.
- Walter E. Burton was born in October of 1864 in Illinois and died October 29, 1918 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. He married Lena Jane Nelson (1867-1944) and had 3 children.
- Jane Christine Burton born about 1866 in Illinois and died May 19, 1936 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. She married Walter W. Packard (1858-1921) and had 3 children.
- Dana Leonard Burton was born November 27, 1869 in Whiteside County, Illinois and died August 25, 1954 in Hubbard County, Minnesota. He married Bertha Lightfoot first and then Minerva C. Rode (1880-1968). He had one son with Minerva.
- Rose R. Burton was born in 1876 and died May 17, 1888 in Minnesota.

Burton Martin
Burton was born March 17, 1845 in Mexico, New York and and died March 21, 1901 in Hewitt, Otter Tail, Minnesota. He married September 13, 1871 to Ella Josephine Duncan who was born September 21, 1852 in Illinois and died February 14, 1902 in Oak Valley, Otter Tail, Minnesota.
They had two children:
- Clarence Leroy Martin born October 26, 1873 in Erie, Whiteside, Illinois and died March 21, 1949 in Bertha, Todd, Minnesota. He married Annie Laurie Persons (1885-1902). They had 9 children.
- Mabel “Belle” Martin was born May 3, 1882 in Otter Tail, Otter Tail County, Minnesota and died March 15, 1942 in Malta, Phillips, Montana. She married Charles S. Carlson (1878-1949) and they had 11 children.
Lettie Martin
Lettie was born August 28, 1852 in Junius, Seneca, New York and married July 30, 1871 to Noah C. Porter. Noah was born in October of 1845 in Indiana and died March 12, 1892 in Minnesota. They had no children. Lettie married in 1897 to Galusha Pardon Irish and lived in Bemidji, Minnesota. Lettie died February 23, 1926 in Bemidji, Beltrami, Minnesota.
Galusha was born August 19, 1841 and died July 10, 1926 in Beltrami, County, Minnesota. He was a Civil War vet and fiddle player. Lettie belonged to the G.A.R. Circle. Galusha and Lettie had no children but she raised Galusha’s children from his first marriage.
