Fayette Martin

Fayette Martin was the son of Edward Martin and Chloe Hopkins. He was born on March 14, 1843 in Parrish, Oswego, New York and died on June 18, 1925 in Amboy, Lee, Illinois at the home of his daughter, Marcia. His obituary says that he was one of Portland’s (IL) oldest residents.

Fayette married three times, his first time on December 29, 1875 to Sarah Dove(y) Martin in Whiteside, Illinois. Sarah was born January 26, 1854 in Portland, Whiteside, Illinois and she died February 8, 1879 and is buried in Sharon Cemetery, Spring Hill, Whiteside, Illinois though she most likely died in Spring Hill. She apparently died just days after giving birth to their second child. Sarah Dove(y) Martin was the daughter of George Trimble Martin (1830-1874) and Margaret Jane Fergus (1823-1900). There doesn’t appear to be a link between the two Martin families. Though “Dovey” is on Sarah’s headstone, some family members believe that there was no “y” on the end. Fayette and Sarah’s children:

George Edward Martin

George was born December 6, 1876 at Spring Hill, Whiteside, Illinois and died May 1, 1968 at Racine, Racine, Wisconsin. He married August 10, 1897 in Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois to Effie Viola Clapper (1879-1934). They lived in Racine, Wisconsin.

Their children:

Carl Wilbur Martin was born August 16, 1899 in Illinois and died July 29, 1920 in New Glarus, Green, Wisconsin.

Lloyd George Martin Sr. (Probably went by George) was born May 2, 1904 in Prophetstown, Whiteside, Illinois and died November 2, 1945 in Ohio. He was married first on February 9, 1922 in Cook County, Illinois to Ella Larson/Larsen (1903-1924). Ella was the daughter of William Larson and Mary Berg, both born in Denmark. Lloyd and Ella had two children:

  • Lloyd George Martin, Jr. born February 10, 1922 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois and died November 30, 1942. He was in the Navy in WWII and died in the Pacific Theatre. He was a Fire Controlman 2c.
  • Dorothy Marie Martin born October 5, 1923 married first to a Thomas who died in 1946 and then she married January 23, 1946 in Los Angeles, California to Daniel J. Crary (1923-1999).

Lloyd Sr. married December 13, 1930 in Lake, Indiana to Sara Elizabeth Moore (1909-1988). Their children:

  • John Carl Martin was born about 1933 in Illinois.
  • Arthur Richard Martin was born about 1936 in Illinois.
  • Doris Elaine Martin was born March 14, 1938 in Illinois and died May 29, 2015. She married Paul James Schroeder (1936-2011). They had 3 children.

Nellie Viola Martin born July 27, 1910 in Racine, Racine, Wisconsin and died January 11, 195 in Keosha, Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 1932 she married Arthur M. Rudolph Holtz (1911-1980) and they had four children.

Maurice Clyde Martin

Maurice was born February 4, 1879 at Spring Hill, Whiteside, Illinois, and died January 3, 1954 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. He and Sadie are buried at the Sharon Cemetery. He married Sadie Lamphere June 22, 1898 at Morrison, Whiteside, Illinois. Sadie Mae Lanphere (1876-1958). They lived in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois.

They had the following children:

  • Vera Dove Martin born July 17, 1899 in Portland, Whiteside, Illinois and died September 30, 1976 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois. She married September 20, 1917 to Robert Samuel LaCoste (1898-1992) — no children.
  • Bessie Lenore Martin was born November 7, 1903 in Morrison, Whiteside, Illinois and died July 19, 1990 in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois. She married October 9, 1953 in Pomona, California to Kenneth A Kirkpatrick (1909-1995) — no known children.
  • Clifford Maurice Martin was born February 25, 1907 in Spring Hill, Whiteside, Illinois and died June 3, 1961, Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin. He married on September 20, 1926 to Violet A. Schwartz (1908-1983).
  • LeRoy Lanphere Martin born April 19, 1912 in Morrison, Whiteside, Illinois and died June 19, 1989 in Winnebago County, Illinois. He was married November 30, 1935 to Bernice M. Wimmer (1914-2018)— no children.

Fayette and Lydia Martin

Fayette married for a second time on March 18, 1880 in Sharon, Whiteside, Illinois to Lydia J. Bolen Clifton. She was born May 2, 1848 in Sharon, Henry County, Illinois and died December 8, 1899 at Sharon, Whiteside, Illinois. His occupation at that time was farmer. This was also Lydia’s second marriage and she had five children from her marriage to Elias Clifton. Only one child, Myrtle Clifton, survived. Picture on left shows George, Bessie, Maurice and possibly Maurice’s wife standing. Marcia is sitting on Fayette’s lap and Lydia is on the right.

Bessie was born January 4, 1881 at Sharon, Illinois and died August 17, 1951, in Wessington Springs, Jerauld, South Dakota. She married September 3, 1898 at Morrison, Whiteside, Illinois to Wallace L. Bennett (1873-1948) Illinois. His father was born in England and his mother was born in New York.

They had the following children:

Myrtle born September 28, 1899 at Prophetstown, Whiteside, Illinois and died February 4, 1981 at Wessington Springs, Jerauld, South Dakota. She married July 31, 1923 in Huron, Jerauld, South Dakota to Glen Fred Eddy (1900-1981).

They had two children:

Joyce Bessie Eddy born February 18, 1927 in Wessington Springs, Jerauld, South Dakota. She married on August 20, 1946 to Eldon Roy Beckman (1923-2019). They had four children: Cynthia L. Beckman Rimpo (1949-2018) and Mark Eldon Beckman (1953-1959), two are living.

Dihl F. Eddy born December 14, 1933 in Wessington Springs, Jerauld, South Dakota and died April 2, 2000 in Plankton, Aurora, South Dakota. (Korean War Vet) — He married and had no children.

Russell Dwight Bennett born May 25, 1924 in Wessington Springs, Jerauld, South Dakota and in . He married Velma Jean Crosby (1926-) and had one son, David Bennett born September 26, 1944 in Butte, Silver Bow, Montana, and died December 13, 1944 same place.

Ruby was born April 4, 1905 at Gray, Cook, Illinois and died January 12, 1982 at Wessington Springs, Jerauld, South Dakota. She married June 4, 1924 at Huron, South Dakota to Dr. Herschel Litherland, born January 7, 1893 and died November 1, 1975 in Wessington Springs, South Dakota.

They had two children:

  • Dr. Bennett Herschel Litherland was born August 22, 1933 in Mitchell, Davison, South Dakota March 17, 2009 in Moline, Rock Island, Illinois. He married and had 3 children.
  • Dorcas Jeanne Litherland was born February 4, 1921 in Holstein, Adams, Nebraska and died January 17, 2013 in Middletown, Butler, Ohio. She was the step-daughter of Ruby. Her mother was Joy Belle Wilson. She married John Ervin Weidner (1924-2005).

Fayette and Kate Martin

Fayette was married for a third time on April 10, 1901 to Catherine “Kate” Wilt born May 9, 1853 in Allegheny, Furnace, Blair, Pennsylvania and died October 26, 1920 in Clinton, Clinton, Iowa.

She was married previously to John Washington Kelly (1848-1878) and Barber J. Curtis (1830-1894). She had children from her previous marriages and is buried beside her first husband. She is a sister to Lydia Wilt, mother of Effie Clapper Martin (wife of George Martin) and had resided in Clinton, Iowa. It is assumed that is where her children lived. Fayette’s daughter Marcia Chloe Martin Glass took care of him until his death on June 18, 1925 in Amboy, Lee, Illinois.
