Family oral history claimed that Mary Youells, wife of Samuel (Sharpe) Glass, was a Pennsylvania Dutch (probably Deutsch) Quaker. I thought that Youells was a German name, and certainly a Quaker name, so that made sense to me. Yes, she was in Pennsylvania and she was a Quaker. But it turns out that for two hundred years the Quakers were indeed in Scotland. Here is what Google AI had to say:
Quakerism came to Scotland during the Cromwellian occupation, and Scottish missionaries spread the faith to various locations. The movement had an estimated 1,500 adherents between 1650 and 1850. However, the Society of Friends never grew to large numbers in Scotland due to persecution by the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches and civic authorities. Some Scottish Quakers emigrated to the North American colonies.
Just recently I learned that Mary had a brother, Benjamin Metler Youells. My g-g-grandfather was Benjamin Metler Glass. More than a coincidence there. Especially since the information was on the back of a photo that was sent to Benjamin Glass’s brother, Samuel Glass. That opened up a whole new avenue for me to explore. Thank you to cousin, Sally, for sharing that information!
So, this is what I’ve been able to put together so far. This page is under construction so there will be more added as I get time.
