Hudson Family

From the book Hudson Genealogy With Related Families, by Roy D. Hudson, August 1, 1957, a little information on the Hudson name is given:

In early England a man was known by but one name. When surnames first came into use, Richard the son of Roger was known as Richard Fitz-Roger, Fitz being a corruption of the Latin, filius, or son. The nickname of Roger was Hodge, and the son of Roger became Hodgson, Hodson or Hudson, and Richard Fitz-Roger became Richard Hudson.

In the opinion of English genealogists, the early ancestors of the Hudson family came into England with William the Conqueror in 1066. They were a numerous family, and the names of Richard, John, Henry and William were repeated to the point of confusion.

Henry Hudson, Gentleman, was an Alderman of London. He had acquired wealth in trade and was the Lord of a number of Manors, some of which had been conferred upon him by King Henry VIII for service to the Crown. He died in 1555, and was buried in the Church of St. Dunstans.

Another Henry Hudson, thought to be the son of Alderman Hudson, was a founder and director of the Muscovy Company, probably the father of Henry Hudson, the Explorer, who made two of his first voyages for the Muscovy Company. After the Explorer, and his son, John, had lost their lives at sea, his wife, Katherine apprenticed another son, Richard to the Company. He served in India and died there in 1648. There was another son, Oliver.

Places of residence and repetition of family names indicate that Alderman Hudson had another son, William, married to Alice Turner, whose son, Richard, was baptized in the ancient Church of St. Editha, Tamworth, Staffordshire, on November 5, 1608. Later he appeared in the register of the Church of St. Mary Aldermary in London, together with records of Oliver Hudson, son of Henry, the Explorer. This Richard had a brother named Nicholas.

Generation 1

Daniel Hudson was born about 1585 in Epping, Essex, England and died 1646 same place. He married January 30, 1616 in Roxwell, Essex, England to Anna Josselyne born August 25, 1588 in Roxwell, Essex, England and died January 1653 in London, England. Anna’s parents were Ralph Josselyne and Mary Bright. Daniel’s parents are unknown.

Generation 2

Daniel Hudson was born 1625 in England and died September 11, 1697 in Lancaster, Worcester, Massachusetts. He was a bricklayer. He married JoAnna White who was born about 1627 (or February 23, 1632) in Lancaster, Worcester, Massachusetts and died September 11, 1697 in Lancaster, Worcester, Massachusetts. Joanna’s parents were John White (1601-1673) and Joane West (1606-1654). Daniel Hudson, along with his wife, Joanna, and two daughters and two grandchildren (of son, Nathaniel) were slain in the Lancaster, Massachusetts Raid of 1697. One-third of the Town of Lancaster was wiped out in that raid and many people taken captive, including Daniel’s two daughters, Joanna and Elizbeth, ages 37 and 40. They were never heard from again but Joanna was thought to have been killed. The townspeople made a valiant effort to defend their homes during the raid, but many of them were killed, including the above Hudson family. Query 1

From Rose on 4/10/2001: I too am a descendant of Daniel Hudson and Anna Josselyn, holding membership to the Colonial Dames and many coats-of-arms to royal lines through the Josselyn ancestry. I do have a document from England (written in Latin, but transcribed to English) that states that Daniel Hudson’s father was William Hudson. I’ll be happy to share it with you if you should want it. All of the royal lineages I have found are through Anna Josselyn’s ancestry. That is not to say that there isn’t royalty on the Hudson line, but as far as I know, no one has traced prior to William Hudson–so your guess is as good as mine who his ancestors were.

Will be happy to share whatever I have on the Hudson and Josselyn lines that you may be interested in.

Query 2

Notes from Wheaton Hudson

First of all Daniel Hudson b. 1585 in Epping [maybe Chatham c/o Kent] had a father William Hudson who was buried in 1613 in Epping. I don’t know any more details at this time. This material is documented.

Secondly: his son Daniel was born 1617 in Epping and christened 1620 also in Epping. I have seen your birth date of 1631 in my search, but my feeling is that the 1617 is correct. If you have documentation I would be very happy to see it. I know Chris Hudson has him born in Chatham, which could be, but his christening was in Epping.

I was sorry to learn that Ramona Hudson Lee passed away in 2015. She wrote a book: “Descendants of Obediah Hudson born 1766 Virginia, a Genealogy” 1996 that is now out of print. I believe she was the founder of the Hudson Family Association.

Another great Hudson resource.

Kip

Hendrick Hendriszen Kip was born about 1600 in Holland. He married Tryntie Droogh. Their son:

Jacob Hendrickszen Kip born in May 16, 1631 in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. He married Maria De La Montagne born January 26, 1637 in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. She was the daughter of Johannes De La Montagne born 1492 and Rachel Monjour. They had two sons:

  • Hendrick Kip was born February 8, 1654.
  • Johannes Kip was born 1665 and married June 29, 1681 to Catherine Kierstede. Catherine was born 1660/1665 in New Amsterdam, New York and died about 1693 in Harrison, Indiana. Catherine’s death place came from “Web: Netherlands, GenealogieOnline Trees Index, 1000-2015”. I believe this to be in error as Harrison, Indiana was not platted until 1837. See Kierstede information below.
Kierstede

Sara Roelofs, daughter of Anneke Webber and Roeloff Jansen Van Maesterlandt was born in New Amsterdam, New York. She married Surgeon Hans Kierstede, lived on the present northeast corner of Pearl and Whitehall streets. She afterward married Cornelius Van Borsum, the owner of the ferry to Long Island, and subsequently Elbert Elbertsen. She was a great proficient in the Indian languages, and acted as interpreter between Stuyvesant and the Esopus and Wappingers, the Agh-in-sack, the Long Island, and the State Island Indians, when their treaty was made with Stuyvesant in the spring of 1664. The great session was held in the council chamber at Fort Amsterdam, where the various representative chiefs assembled. That was the last treaty of peace between the Hollanders and the Indians, and was signed under a salute from the guns of the Fort.1

I have recently been in contact with a descendent of the Kierstede family and have included her information on this site. Her name is Elaine Gould. Her line is:

The line begins with Dr. Hans Kierstede from Magdenburg, Germany, who married married Sara Roelofs June 29, 1642 in New Amsterdam, New York. Hans and Sarah had the following children that I know of though I’m sure there are more:

Roeloff Kierstede

Catherine Kierstede was born 1655 and married Johannes Kip

Jacobus Kierstede was born 1663 New York and married Ann Holmes in 1691 in Long Island, New York. Their line follows:

Samuel Kierstede married Lydia Dey in 1718 in Port Richmond, Staten Island, New York

Samuel Kierstede was born 1719 and married Mary Johnson in 1749 in New Jersey

Mary Kierstede was born 1770 New York and married 1788 in New Brunswick, Canada to Aaron Delong. She was born 1757 in New York. Their daughter, Catherine DeLong was born 1789 in Millstream, New Brunswick, Canada. Catherine married in 1813 in New Brunswick, Canada to Richard Perkins who was born 1794. They lived in Carlton, New Brunswick, Canada. Their children:

  • John Perkins was born in 1824. He married in New Brunswick in 1847 to Frances Sharp who was born in 1828.
  • Howard R. Perkins
  • Viva A. Perkins married Johnson (this was Elaine’s grandmother)

Your Family Tree

Kiersteads claim blue blood through House of Orange The Kierstead genealogy might be one of the Maritime’s most intriguing and romantic. There is probably not a Kierstead who hasn’t been told by his or her grandfather that the family descends from Dutch Royalty through the House of Orange and that matriarch Anneke Jans Webber, reportedly born in the King’s Mansion in Holland in 1605, was widowed twice in New York.

Penniless, 40-year-old Anneke was left with eight dependent children under the age of 18 and eldest daughter Sarah Roeloffson Kierstede married to Dr. Jans Kierstede. Anneke quit her swampy farm in favour of Albany, little realizing that the abandoned 62-acres would become a part of the Kierstead legend. Today that long-ago farm, bounded on the west by the Hudson River and on the east by an irregular line between Broadway and West Broadway, is in the heart of New York City.

For more than 200 years, various descendants and representative groups launched lawsuit after lawsuit in vain attempts to lay claim to the plot which today encompasses the modern neighbourhoods of Greenwich Village, SoHo and Tibeca on Manhattan Island. Apparently the New York County clerk still receives occasional inquiries from alleged heirs. Some have paid large sums of money to so-called genealogists, who falsely represented that a documented pedigree is the key to unclaimed riches.

Thankfully for the Kierstead/Keirstead clan descended from United Empire Loyalists Samuel Kierstead and Mary Johnson, there are family historians with selfless motives. Don Keirstead of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, stopped by the Kings County Museum in Hampton this summer to leave printed versions and a database of a 1971 genealogy, information for which was gathered over several prior decades by late family researchers, Mrs. Martin Kierstead and Enoch Arden Markham. On computer, the search function helps make up for a lack of index in the scattered printed version, produced before software made organizing data easy. In Indiana, Glendon Kierstead has recently published his memoirs entitled High Mileage for My Model. Born in Plaster Rock, Glendon and his wife, the former Betty McBay of Argosy, have served in mission fields in southern Africa and in pastorates in Maine and Indiana. Drawing from his own experiences, his mother’s diaries (nee: Gladys Rodney of Sandford, N.S.) and his grandfather’s sermon’s (Rev. Isaac Freeman Kierstead), Glendon has produced a warmhearted and readable 143-page paperback. Contact author: 1122 Normandale St., Fort Wayne, Indiana, 46808.

SEARCHING IN N.B. KIERSTEAD – Arthur T. Kierstead, born New Brunswick, Feb.27, 1876, son of William. Was Arthur related to Amos Kierstead and/or William B. Jennings who witnessed his naturalization in Boston, June 23, 1898? Also seek information about Arthur’s parents, grandparents, siblings. *Merovee and Verica produced two of our ancestors-Childeric and Adelbert. I followed Childeric only.
**By various women Charlemagne was our ancestor several times.
Interestingly, many of these people were sometimes our double or more ancestors.
