Her parents were Henry Bowen (1738-1808) and Nancy G. Ledbetter (1737-1805). It is important to note that the Harmison name has been seen with several different variations in records. On page 104 of Colonial churches in the original colony of Virginia : a series of sketches. Richmond, Va.: Southern Churchman Co., 1908, Thomas Harmanson is mentioned as a Burgess of the county of Northhampton, Virginia in 1691. In the Sims index to land grants in West Virginia. Charleston, W. Va.: unknown, 1952, Thomas Harmison is listed as receiving a 247 acre land grant in Ambrose Run in 1766. Also, this land is mentioned in “Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1742-1775. Vol. II” and listed as “Thomas Harmison of Frederick Co. 247 A. on Head Spring of Ambrose’s Run below Sleepy Cr. near Potwmack R. in said Co. Surv. Thomas Rutherford Adj. Barrett Family

Generation 1-Jacob Barrett, Sr. was born April 1, 1730 in East Nottingham, Chester, Pennsylvania and died February 28, 1802 in Newberry, South Carolina. He married Lydia or possibly Sarah. The Barrett family were Quakers1. Because their son Jacob, jr. was born at Frederick County, Virginia we can say that Virginia was a residence at least during 1762. By 1776 they were living in South Carolina2. Lydia/Sarah must have died previous to October 3, 1774 in Virginia as Jacob and his children removed to Bush River, South Carolina. The children listed are Joseph, Benjamin, Jeremiah (Jemima), Arthur, Jacob and Lidia3. There is a Lydia Barrett buried at Bush River Quaker Cemetery in Newberry, Newberry, South Carolina there is a small weathered stone but there are no dates for her. Possibly this is his daughter, Lidia.

Generation 2-Jacob Barrett, Jr. was born about 1762 in Frederick County, Colony, Virginia and died in 1796 in Newberry, Newberry, South Carolina. In 1784 he married Jemima(?) Dobbins the daughter of John and Mary Dobbins.

Generation 3-Abner Barrett was born in 1775 in Newberry County, South Carolina and died April 20, 1859 in Rochester, Fulton, Indiana. He married Mary Pemberton on December 23, 1810 in Miami County, Ohio.

Abner arrived in Salem, Champaign County, Ohio between 1802-1804. The town was not organized until 1805. Abner was the first clerk of this township. He was a War of 1812 veteran being discharged as Captain. He commanded his own unit, “Capt. Barrett’s Company, Ohio Militia.”

Captain Abner Barrett settled on what is known as Ruffin’s Ridge, but subsequently moved to a cabin in Union Township, on the ridge bordering the lower section of Dugan Prairie, the corner of his land being within a few rods of the Ludlow line.  The farm now belongs to and is occupied by James Young.

The Captain was a tall, active and muscular man, with a stentorian voice, and was fond of telling the fright given to a six foot Kentuckian, who had stopped with him for the night, by the unexpected entrance of Tecumseh. Seeing the man’s fears, Tecumseh patted him encouragingly on the shoulder, calling him a big baby.*

Later in life, he was injured in one leg by an accident in crossing a frozen stream, which compelled him to walk with a crutch or cane. He was an early riser, and his voice might have been heard any morning calling the hired hands and boys to work. The home of the Captain overlooked the stretch of beautiful prairie in which the town of Mutual is built.

Abner was appointed as a commissioner to the board of directors of the poor house in Champaign County.

*Note, the man Abner told about in his story was Daniel Boone. This fact is spoken about in other records and accounts.

Eunice Emily Barrett was born March 16, 1819 in Union City, Miami, Ohio to Abner and Mary Pemberton Barrett. She married September 14, 1837 in La Porte, Indiana to Isaac Wesley Harmison. She died July 7, 1900 in Wheaton, Chippewa, Wisconsin. See more on the Harmison family above.

Pemberton Family

George Pemberton was born about 1660 in England. He married Sarah Middleton probably from Nantwich, Cheshire, England.

“….. George Pemberton, lived in Cheshire County of parish England.  His residence was known by the name of “Pemberton Huff”, and received its name from some circumstance that took place between the King and himself, and the King ordered the following notice to be put up at the Pemberton’s gatepost:

‘While olives are green and commodities rough, Here is the place for Pemberton’s huff’.”
