Jonathan Olin, Esq.

Jonathan Olin was born June 17, 1737 in East Grenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island. He died January 9, 1826 in Shaftsbury, Bennington County, Vermont. He married Anne Gardiner who was born May 2, 1735 in East Greenwich and died November 28, 1811 probably in Shaftsbury. He married secondly to a woman named Meriba. Jonathan and Anne may have had a daughter, Phebe Mattison and they adopted one son:

Captain Jonathan Olin born September 5, 1766 in East Greenwich, died June 25, 1851 in Franklin, Morrow County, Ohio. He married Penelope Harrington who was born August 25, 1769 in Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island and died August 3, 1795 in Shaftsbury Center, Bennington, VT. There is another record for a Penelope Harrington married to Jonathan Olin that shows she died April 29, 1847 in Morrow County, OH. They had the following children:

From Chris: Jonathan Olin, Jr. was my 5th GGF. His father, Jonathan Olin, Sr. referred to Jonathan, Jr. several times in his will as "my adopted son". Jonathan, Jr. is the only child I know of from Jonathan and Anne (Gardiner) Olin's marriage, and he was born 9 years after they were married. This seems to indicate that they could not have children and that they possibly took in a nephew or perhaps some other relative to raise. This is just conjecture on my part, but it was fairly common in those days. I doubt that any records would exist in RI that could point to who they "adopted" or who his biological parents were. It is hard enough for adoptees to find their parents today, much less after 200+ years. By the way, when Jonathan Olin, Jr. married Penelope Harrington, his uncle Gideon Olin conducted the wedding ceremony.
