Jedediah Ellis

Jedediah Ellis b. April 10, 1822 in Woodstock, MA (now CT) to Samuel Ellis and Betsey Young. He died July 6, 1894, Richland, Oswego Cty, NY. He married Harriet Augusta Moffitt. A record of their marriage can be found here.Worester City Directory

On James and Sophronia's birth records it shows that Jedediah was a miller. Later in New York he became a shingle sawyer.

Jedediah is buried in Richland, Oswego County, New York where he had finally settled. According to the Richland Town Historian in New York, there are no town records that show him actually dying there. Perhaps he died while visiting elsewhere (one of his children?) and his body was removed to Richland to be laid to rest beside his two wives. (See tombstone at left).

Jedediah and Harriet Moffitt had seven children:

The last six children were probably all born in New York though birth records could not be found at the Pulaski courthouse. The 1860 U.S. Census for Oswego County, New York, shows Jedediah at 39 years of age and living in the Town of Richland. Harriet died in 1864 in Richland, NY.

Jedediah married a woman named Susan who was born June 15, 1835. Susan died October 14, 1872 at age 32.

They had one son:

In the 1880 U.S. State Census it shows Dixson Ellis living with Jedediah and Frederick. Susan had passed away and perhaps Jedediah took a second wife? She is 7 years younger than Jedediah. In 1875 she is listed as a domestic and her name was Betsy Dixson.

The 1880 United States Census for Richland, Owego, New York shows Jedadiah Ellis, age 57, wife Dixson (typo) age 50, son Frederick age 11.

There are no other descendants from this union. Jedidiah is shown in the 1892 New York State Census in Oswego, Cty living alone.

In John's obituary it shows that he had one brother in Pulaski (NY), one in Syracuse (NY), and three sisters in Moline, IL (Sophronia?), Nebraska (Frances), and Syracuse, NY (Havens). It is unknown for sure who Eliza and Carrie married but it is known that one daughter married a Havens while the other married a Leffingwell. John Ellis was listed in the 1900 soundex as a boarder in the home of Miles Leffingwell in the city of Beloit.

James may have passed away before John. Charles would have been the one who lived in Pulaski as there is a headstone for him there with his wife, Frances, the dates for Charles are 1853-1907 and for Frances 1856-1948.

Although, Horace (1855-1938) and his wife, Ada, also were buried at Pulaski, New York, I believe that they lived in Syracuse. In the Riverside Cemetery in Richland there are two lots; one owned by C. Ellis and one by R. Ellis (Roy?)

In the local newspaper, the Pulaski Democrat in Pulaski, NY, mention is made that J.V. and wife were in town to visit his brother, Charles and to attend the funeral of his father [Jedediah] at the Disciples Church. We found the grave sites of Charles and wife (she had no stone) and Horace and his wife (with many Trumbulls). Also, in the Pulaski Democrat it shows that Mrs. Ada Ellis recently visited Pulaski.

There is a Charles A. Ellis listed in the U.S. Population Schedule-Special Union Veterans 1890-New York. He was a private in the 149th NY Vol. No Dates are given but it shows that his address was 104 Niagara St., Syracuse, NY. He died in the poor house apparently and it also shows his widow as Delia. Our Charles may have been too young for that war?
