BAILEY FAMILY

I am not entirely sure yet of this line. I have to sort out records from oral family history to be sure. Here is what I have so far:

According to his son's death record, Russell Bailey was from Manchester, MA. He was married to A(melia) Thompson who was born in Ticonderoga, NY.

Amelia Overton Thompson was born September 3, 1814 and was the daughter of Charles Thompson and Ann Pettus Graves. There is a Russel Bailey shown in the 1830 NY Census in Essex County at Crown Point (page 265) however when I looked at that record the information for that year was not very helpful. Russel Bailey is shown as having 2 children, Chas. age 6 and Jane age 13 in the 1850 New York Census.

Charles Edgar Bailey was born September 20, 1844 in Lewis, Essex Cty, New York died November 12, 1905 in Eau Claire, Eau Claire Cty, WI at 61y, 1m, 22d. In the 1905 census and his obituary show Charles as being born in Canada. He arrived in Eau Claire about 1875. In the Eau Claire records, Charles E. Bailey's parents were Russell Bailey and Amelia Thompson of Ticonderoga, NY. Charles was born in Canada and Ticonderoga is not far from the border.

Interestingly, a J.A. Bailey is shown as living with George Nelson as well as J.A. Bailey, age 70. Was he a brother to Charles?

Rebecca Hall

Charles married July 11, 1869 in Otter Creek, Eau Claire Cty, WI to Josephine Rebecca Hall who was born in 1850 in New York and living in August, WI at the time. Rebecca, as she was called, died March 22, 1930 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI where she was living with her daughter, Lyda. (pics) Rebecca's parents were John Hall and Melisa Hall both born in New York. Charles was a painter (and also worked in refrigeration) and he and Rebecca were Protestants and lived at E. Bluff St. Both are buried at Forest Hill Cemetery. They had four children:

William Henry Bailey b: September 8, 1871 in Sparta, WI.

Russel(l) Claude Bailey b: January 2, 1879 in Sparta, WI

John "Jack" Rodrick Bailey b: March 11, 1887 in Sparta, WI, died in Chicago, IL.

Lyda M. Bailey b: December 4, 1888 in WI

Footnotes:

Other Baileys in the area during 1905 Census were Samuel B., Deborah, and Polly.

[3] Birth year was taken from the 1905 WI Census, Eau Claire. However, the 1900 census shows her as being born in 1887 in WI and that her name was Eliza. So, she was most likely an Elizabeth.

Additional notes:

From History of Northern Wisconsin, Chicago 1881: William H. Bailey b: 1835 Essex Cty, NY went to Eau Claire, WI in 1857. Charles Bailey 1843-1905, Josephine Bailey 1851-1930 (2nd wife?).

John and Lyda are not yet born in 1880. Melissa is Rebecca's mother. Other records show her as being born in NY.

Interestingly, there was another William Henry Bailey living in Eau Claire on the same street at the same time. He married an M.M. Bailey. The two families are not at all related, however. Also, there were three Charles E. Baileys in Eau Claire. (A genealogists nightmare!) I found all of these Baileys in the records at Eau Claire Cty Courthouse as well as grave sites at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Eau Claire. In addition, there is another Russell C. Bailey who looks a lot like our Bailey family. Click here for more information on him.

I was told by my grandaunt Florence Bailey Martin that Charles' father or grandfather was a doctor in Newfoundland and was of English extraction. However, according to the 1905 census of Wisconsin, Charles' parents were both born in Scotland. New information has surfaced that shows that Rebecca Hall's family was from Canada.

A good Hall family website

Hollis Russell Bailey (possible relation?)

Another option for my Bailey ancestors:

John Bailey married Elizabeth Russell on August 21, 1760 in Marblehead, Essex Cty, MA.

Russel(l) Bailey was born May 16, 1804 in Marblehead, Essex, MA. On FindaGrave, Russell's headstone can be found. It shows his wife as being Hannah Andrews Bailey (1806-1857). According to the Marblehead marriage records, Russell Bailey and Hannah Andrews married in December 24, 1827. On the tombstone is the deathdate of October 28, 1848. Because Hannah died in 1857, she was 51 years of age. If this is the correct Russell then Hannah would have been Charles' mother, not Amelia Thompson. I find this unlikely at this point. If there is any connection at all, it feels like there is a generation missing between Charles's father Russell and this Russell. Other names on the headstone are:

John L. Bailey 1837-1878 (see notes below--this is probably 1873?)

Calvin K. Brown 1827-1908

Mary E. Brown 1823-1914

The following records are from Marblehead, MA:

Captain John Bailey d: April 22, 1828 age 67

Mary, daughter of John and Mary d. September 30, 1789 age 10m 8d.

Mary, Widow of Captain John Bailey died May 13, 1840 age 79 y. 7m. 13d.

Russell Bailey, ticket master, son of John and Mary, died of dysentery on October 20, 1848. 44 y.5m.15d.

Thomas, son of Capt. John and Mary d. suddenly October 9, 1824.

Widow of John Bailey, died July 10, 1813

Child of John R. and Catharine Bailey died of measles on October 13, 1821 a 2y.

Catherine wife of John Bailey died of consumption October 1, 1830 age 38.

Edward L. Bailey died October 7, 1834 age 12 y.

John son of Capt. John and Mary Bailey d. Aug 3, 1786 age 2 y. 11 m.

John son of Capt. John and Mary Bailey d. Aug 30, 1789 age 10

There is a John L. Bailey who died May 8, 1873 in Chicago, IL at age 36. He would have been born about 1837 in Marblehead, MA. His parents are shown as Russell and Hannah Andrews Bailey.

There is a Bailey Men's DNA Testing Project (Y-DNA)
